As for recovery and spirituality books, you can't go wrong with one that has become a staple to many -

The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox

Now past it's 65th birthday, this book by a great spiritual teacher, has deep roots and influence in the recovery program of Alcoholics Anonymous.  As AA was founded and growing several years before it had any literature of it's own, the early members used "outside literature" and guidance from spiritual leaders for reading and inspiration.  Emmet Fox was key among these as early members used to read his literature and flock to hear him speak weekly in New York City in the 1930's.  A lot of AA language can be found in Emmet Fox's writing - things such as "staying on the beam", "letting go of resentments", and "living one day at a time".  Emmet Fox teaches, above all else, that the things that we focus upon manifest themselves and that the mind is a very powerful thing.

“The Truth turns out to be nothing less than the amazing but undeniable fact that the whole outer world--whether it be the physical body, the common things of life, the winds and the rain, the clouds, the earth itself--is amenable to man's thought, and that he has dominion over it when he knows it.” - The Sermon on the Mount, Emmet Fox

Fox's book, while taking us through Jesus' teachings on the Sermon on the Mount and dissecting The Lord's Prayer, is a great practical guide to spiritual development.  I think that he could have given these lessons with most any material and he does do this in some of this other books that are essay collections.  I wouldn't let the fact that he is using scripture be a turn off as I haven't been near a bible in years yet I find Emmet Fox to be one of the most powerful spiritual teachers I have found and continue to study his various books.  In fact, there are outside study groups for Emmet Fox materials that have sprung up in some cities (including mine) and these can be helpful if this interests you.  You can learn more about Emmet Fox and look for Emmet Fox Meetings here.  Otherwise, if you haven't read The Sermon on the Mount yet, I highly recommend it as it continues to be one of my favorite spirituality books:

Description

What did Jesus teach? Distilled from years of study and lecture, affirmed by nearly a million readers over the last fifty years, Emmet Fox's answer in The Sermon on the Mount is simple. The Bible is a "textbook of metaphysics" and the teachings of Jesus express--without dogma--a practical approach for the development of the soul and for the shaping of our lives into what we really wish them to be. For Fox, Jesus was "no sentimental dreamer, no mere dealer in empty platitudes, but the unflinching realist that only a great mystic can be."In his most popular work, Emmet Fox shows how to: Understand the true nature of divine wisdom. Tap into the power of prayer. Develop a completely integrated and fully expressed personality. Transform negative attitudes into life-affirming beliefs. Claim our divine right to the full abundance of life.

The Sermon on the Mount--now passing its 65th birthday--remains a vital and provocative introduction to the ideas at the heart of Christian Science. At heart it means to be entirely practical, as the "Science" of the name would indicate. Denying any interest in theology (there is no theology in the Bible, Fox argues), the author instead suggests that what Jesus was after was results: "Jesus explains to us what the nature of God is, and what our own nature is; tells us the meaning of life and of death; shows us why we make mistakes; why we yield to temptation; why we become sick, and impoverished, and old; and, most important of all, he tells us how all these evils may be overcome, and how we may bring health, happiness, and true prosperity into our lives." And the Spiritual Key? Fox puts it quite simply: "The Truth turns out to be nothing less than the amazing but undeniable fact that the whole outer world--whether it be the physical body, the common things of life, the winds and the rain, the clouds, the earth itself--is amenable to man's thought, and that he has dominion over it when he knows it." --Doug Thorpe
