The book that is considered to be the ground-breaking work in the field of sex addiction is called

Out of the Shadows by Patrick Carnes

First published in 1983, it's long title is Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction. This book, by Patrick Carnes, was the first released on this disorder and written by a pioneer in its treatment. The book has been updated several times and now has sections that address online porn and cybersex. Carnes' book continues to be one of the top books in this field, dispensing with a lot of long-held myths about sexual compulsions. One of these is that the things that we do in secret really don't harm anyone else. Carnes takes the wind out of these sails by illustrating just how such acts do affect family and other areas of our lives.

“We are so used to our own history, we do not see it as remarkable or out of the ordinary, whereas others might see it as horrendous. Further, we tend to minimize that which we feel shameful about.” - Patrick Carnes

What Carnes also does with his revolutionary book is to give the sufferer hope. This is something that was not available for a sex addict before. All that was available to them was shame. Carnes does go into the dynamics of underlying issues that drive behavior. One of the ways to identify those causes and behaviors is through participation in a 12 Step Recovery program. Some people take issue with this approach but I don't as I always see the benefit of one addict helping another as immense. Carnes also has quite a few other books on this subject but this is his first one and I would recommend that you start here if you are interested in his material.
