Opiate Addiction by Taite Adams
Opiate Addiction by Taite Adams
It's long title is Opiate Addiction: The Painkiller Addiction Epidemic, Heroin Addiction and The Way Out. This is a detailed read on opiates of every form from someone who has used and abused them, and then found recovery. Taite Adams does a great job of being thorough without being overly technical and confusing for the layperson. She even gives a fascinating history of opiates, including their use, abuse and glorification through the ages. While opiates come in different forms, they work on the brain in a similar fashion and she takes the time to explain just what these substances are doing to a person's brain, both with use and abuse.
As many opiate users tend view themselves as unique in some form or fashion, Adams caters to this by dedicating individual chapters in the book to such things as: Vicodin Addiction, Percocet Addiction, Morphine Addiction, Oxycodone Addiction and then spends quite a bit of time talking about heroin and it's new wave of popularity that she, rightly, attributes to the painkiller epidemic in this country. As Taite is a recovering addict herself, she spends time weaving parts of her own story throughout the book that give it both a personal touch and infuse a ton of credibility into her statements. She talks about the recovery process from opiate addiction and what it takes to get free from the grip of opiates and heroin. There are chapters dedicated to detox and even some detailed discussions on opiate replacement therapy (ORT), which is always a controversial subject.
First published in 2013, Opiate Addiction is the #1 Selling book on Amazon's for search terms such as "opiates" and "opiate addiction", and for good reason. With reviews such as "Best Opiates Book I've Found", "Balance and Thorough Book on Opiates", and "Educational and Informative".
This book is a winner. It deals with one of society's most dreadful and sometimes unnoticed epidemic, painkiller addiction. Adams illustrates through research and from a personal perspective, the effects of heroin and painkiller addiction not just to the addict but also their loved ones. I would recommend this book to anyone on that path to self destruction or to loved ones of addicts because this book is very resourceful. It is compiled with resourceful and useful information to help anyone wanting to kick their opiate addiction. Overall, good book!
We agree. In fact, Opiate Addiction was just updated and released in a 2nd Edition in March 2014, with updated statistics and several new Chapters, including a new Chapter on the new prescription drug Zohydro. If you are looking for a balanced and thorough book on opiate addiction from someone who's been in the trenches and found their way out (I believe Adams has been clean over 12 years!), put this one at the top of your list.
