Another good book on emotional sobriety that looks at behaviors and underlying conditions is

Emotional Sobriety by Tian Dayton

First published in 2010 by addictions psychologist Tian Dayton, the long title is: Emotional Sobriety: From Relationship Trauma to Resilience and Balance.  This is not only a good book about emotional sobriety, it's a great book about addiction and everything that comes with it.   Dayton talks a lot about addiction, what it is, it's many forms and how addictive behaviors are used to cover up emotional hurts and regulate mood.  Emotional sobriety is the ability to tolerate and manage those emotions and moods without turning to outside things such as alcohol, drugs, food, and sex.

"Learning to tolerate experiencing our strong emotions and use our thinking minds to elevate them to a conscious level where we can actually feel the feelings and think the thoughts surrounding them is key to developing emotional sobriety." - Tian Dayton

Dayton talks about the importance of being able to identify feelings first and then develop the ability to deal with them.  She even delves into the way that our limbic system processes things like mood, appetite and sleep cycles and how these are all important elements to emotional sobriety.   There is more than just a series of explanations of causes here, though.  There is some great direction here for help and recovery for anyone looking to get on a path to true emotional sobriety and get past underlying emotional hurts.

If you have past relationship trauma or emotional hurts that you are having difficulty with that you feel are holding you back in your recovery, this could be a great book for you.  However, if you want to take a look at emotional sobriety and how to get back on track with your recovery program, perhaps give this more well-rounded book a try as well.
