Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down by Georgia W
It's long title is Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down - 50 Things Every Alcoholic and Addict in Early Recovery Should Know. We'll call the author "Georgia" because she doesn't give her last name. In recovery herself, originally from England but now living in Colorado. There really are 50 Things (50 Chapters) in this 150+ Page book. So, if you are someone who likes brevity and short chapter books, this is definitely for you.
That's not to say that there isn't some great content here. 50 Things is A LOT of things and Georgia does a great job of going through all of them and presenting them in a light-hearted and easy to understand manner. Just a few of them are: "The First 30 Days", "Things to Avoid", "Feelings", "Isolation", "Dating", "Sponsorship", "Resentments" and "Making Amends". Of course, there are books out there that delve into all of these subjects in greater depth and detail but that's not really the point for someone in very early sobriety. The point is to touch on them, give a brief overview, maybe make you smile and then move on. The author accomplishes this with her book.
First published in 2009, the book is just over 150 pages and does not appear to have been updated since the initial release. The material is still very relevant but I am surprised that there are only 30 reviews for a book that I suspect sells quite well. The book is available in both Kindle and paperback and the Kindle version seems a bit pricey compared to others in it's category. It is a good early recovery book, particularly if you like short chapters. The other book that we recommend, that is also more affordable, can be found here.
