codependent no more

If you are looking for codependency books, the first one that you should pick up is the ground-breaking book

Codependent No More by Melody Beattie

First published in 1986 and since updated, it's long title is Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring For Yourself.  Many people assume that Beattie coined the term "codependent" with this book.  I think that I may have even stated something along these lines in another review.  The truth is that the term was first coined over 30 years ago by the Adult Children of Alcoholics group.  Beattie was simply the first person to write a book about it that sold millions of copies.   This book has been a life-saver for countless people who simply had no idea why they were behaving in a certain manner and were unable to find happiness in their lives.

“I used to spend so much time reacting and responding to everyone else that my life had no direction. Other people's lives, problems, and wants set the course for my life. Once I realized it was okay for me to think about and identify what I wanted, remarkable things began to take place in my life.” - Melody Beattie

For years the definition of a codependent was someone who was raised by alcoholics or addicts.  This is no longer the case as it has now been broadened to include "dysfunctional families", which could really be all-inclusive if you think you have some codependency issues.  Beattie details specific examples from her personal experiences, which are varied, that allow her readers to connect with her message of emotional turmoil and hope.  Beattie gives hope for recovery and is a strong advocate of 12 Step recovery programs and spirituality.   If you are looking for a good book on codependency, you can't go wrong starting with this one.
