Beautiful Boy by David Sheff

Published before his son's book, David Sheff's book - Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction takes us through meth addiction from a family member's perspective and it is both painful and gripping.  David Sheff is a writer by trade so does a good job with this and it's interesting to note that this is a rare title that was selected by Starbucks to be sold in their stores. I guess they felt that it would appeal to their audience.    What we find in this book is a father who is wrought with grief (read: obsessed) over his son's addiction and blames himself for every bit of it. He blames his divorce to his son's mother and his own drug use when he was younger, among many other things.

"Anyone who has lived through it, or those who are now living through it, knows that caring about an addict is as complex and fraught and debilitating as addiction itself." - Beautiful Boy, David Sheff

Aside from the insight that we get from a different perspective with meth addiction, David Sheff also provides a lot of facts and details about meth in his book that I think are great.  He talks about addiction and brain chemistry and uses his investigative reporter skills to explore any hope for a "cure".  He finds little of that.  Aside from the gritty honesty and insight that we get into the soul of a tortured parent of an addict, there isn't much here beyond a lot of caution.  If you're a parent, you'll want to read this.  If you're an addict, you'll probably be interested as well.  The truly "break-through" thing we have here are the two books together that illustrate the views of a parent and child struggling with meth addiction.  That's what makes these reads worth the time.  Check it out here:
